David J. Johnson - Lead Pastor Pastor Dave Johnson serves a lead pastor of Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church. He and his wife Mary have three children. Son Peter and his wife Katie live in Portland, son Ben lives in Seattle and daughter Katie lives in Oak Harbor.
Dave grew up in Western Washington (Olympia) and graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma with a degree in Music Education. He earned his Masters of Theology Degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and his Doctor of Ministry Degree from San Francisco Theological School.
Dave and Mary have served the following churches in Washington: Vancouver, Winlock, Vader, PeEll, Richland, Port Hadlock, Issaquah and Spokane Valley.
Dave enjoys working out, basketball and good physical activity.
Dave believes that the church is the “hope of the world when it is working right.” He is an avid reader and student of leadership both in the church and in the business world.
Dave’s call to ministry is be a “Catalyst for Christ Centered Growth and his heart song centers around worship that is dynamic, authentic, creative, transformational, excellent and fun.
Pastor David retired as of 30 June 2010. He and Colleen have begun a one-half time position as pastor of Rockford United Methodist Church south and east of Spokane, Washington as of September 1st. This will be a return engagement for the Luras as they previously served this same church from July of 1980 until September of 1984.

Chet grew up in Oak Harbor and returned to his home town to pursue his passion for music. He directs both the vocal and bell choirs 3/4 time at the church and teaches piano and drum lessons out of the music cottage at his home. He also directs the Whidbey Community Chorus which performs two concerts a year. He and his wife, Laurie (who also teaches piano lessons), have been married since 1996 and have eight children and one grandchild between them.
Hunter comes to us from Clarksville (near Nashville) Tennessee. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (with concentrations in philosophy, education and psychology) from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville. He has served in youth ministries at Sango UMC and New Providence UMC in Clarksville and Brewer's Chapel UMC in Chapmansboro, TN. In addition he has served as a part-time Local Pastor of the Cumberland City Charge of three United Methodist Churches. In addition to youth and young adult leadership, Hunter has served as a substitute teacher and as an assistant and head wrestling coach and soccer coach. While in college he was in no less than three honor societies, was a relationship advice columnist for the newspaper, started three new college programs and is a United Methodist Certified Lay Speaker. Hunter arrived in Oak Harbor in August of 2008. Be on your best behavior, because Hunter currently plays Right Tackle and Defensive Tackle on a local Minor League Football team.
Peggy Miller-Stephens - Secretary Peggy Miller joined OHFUMC in 1991. She sings in the choir and creates decorations for the annual Mirth Event, the Patriotic Musical and most recently, Vacation Bible School. She became reacquainted with a high school prom date, Ray Stephens, and they were married by Pastor David on a boat in Bowman Bay under the Deception Pass Bridge in July of 2004. Peggy's love of animals has become an in-home cat-sitting business called . . . The Cat's Meow.
Lisa Smith - Pianist/Organist Lisa is the librarian at Oak Harbor High School. She and her husband, Ed, and her father, retired pastor and VA Hospital Chaplain, Verne Robinson, moved to Oak Harbor in 2004. Lisa also plays in the church Praise Ringers handbell choir and sings in the Whidbey Community Chorus.
Betty Jo Shaddy-Brown - Custodian Betty Jo Shaddy-Brown joined the OHFUMC in 1992. She joined choir a few months later. Along with Peggy Miller-Stephens she helps decorate for the annual Mirth event and the Patriotic Musical. The past couple of years Peggy and Betty Jo have also painted the flats for Vacation Bible School. Betty Jo retired from Civil Service at NAS Whidbey Island in September 2007 after 30 yrs. of service. Shortly after retiring, she began volunteering at the church. In June 2009 Betty Jo was hired as the custodian Betty Jo and Larry Brown were married at OHFUMC in 1995. Betty Jo has two children and two grandchildren.
Kevin is a native of Selah, Washington. He served over ten years with the U.S. Navy and is currently a teacher aide at Oak Harbor High School. He and his wife, Susan (who is one of the church nursery staff), are parents to Holly.
